When I was in high school, I attended a three-week art camp that was overwhelming and illuminative, but not in the ways that the professors likely expected. In an activity one evening, someone made an innocuous joke about Christianity. Reflexively, the professor running the activity said “Let’s leave Jesus out of this.” At 16 years old, this was my first encounter with modern art and artists that insisted on their independence from faith, a notion that I found (and still find) baffling. I resolved to find grounding for this insistence in my heart that Christ doesn’t merely belong in the art I am creating - he inspires it. It is in him, in God, that we encounter Beauty in the first place.
